(Conducted in Cantonese)

Charismatic dancers of the 20th century - Vaslav Nijinsky, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov – are superstars who had interpreted countless dance classics and are loved by millions of dance enthusiasts.  These outstanding dancers inherited and passed down centuries of ballet traditions and opened up new horizons in the realm of dance.  They danced, and in the wake of their excellence, choreographed, dedicating themselves to the creation of new dances that stood at the forefront of their times, or supervising the staging of their own versions of full-length productions.

The lecture series this year has The Legend Continues as its theme.  We will revisit various thrilling excerpts of the gravity-defying moments of these great ballet dancers, and appreciate a new generation of dance stars who have taken the baton in their performance of representative classical and contemporary pieces.

Dance to Stand: A courage-raising performance in solidarity「我舞嘢講」同行義氣演出

Overview

【Dance to Stand: A courage-raising performance in solidarity】

We are a group of performers who express our faith and feelings through our body - a battleground thrust upon us by birth.

This June, people took to the street to protest the extradition law, resulting in the excessive force used by the police, prompting defiant civilians to converge on the street. It has been two months since the outcry, taking Hong Kong people to a unique state of burning experience. For us who practise dance, we are overwhelmed by what we witness on the street: the sequences of dance improvisation, choreographed by people’s blood, sweat and growl. Emotions, bodies, and energies of defiance flow on the street to become ubiquitous and omniform tides of resistance.

In response to and support of the concerted efforts of the protesters, a group of performers from various backgrounds are presenting a courage-raising performance of movement and music. The performance calls for support for the organisations that help in the fight for justice. It is also a show of solidarity, as we believe on whatever stage we stand, we stand together, and no one less!

*Heartfelt thanks to all volunteering performers and participating parties, and the support of Cattle Depot Theatre and art-mate. All proceeds go to Hong Kong In-Media & 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund.

Star of Canaan- Musical Theatre Competition

Star of Canaan, “Star” means the horizons that all dancers pursue and dream of regardless of their age or ability. Star is literally the shining star up above the sky that is beyond our reach. “Star” therefore resembles the ultimate goal all dancers are pursuing which is the “state of perfection” in dance. Despite all hardships and difficulties, we still persist on and strive to be closer to such “Star”, trying our best to pursue the “state of perfection”. This “Star” leads us to our way of success and guides us to feel the true essence of dance; it also symbolises the kind of motivation we need.

An out-of-this world Olympiad to personal transcendence

The Olympic Games are coming!

A passionate amateur is training hard to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Games, alongside elite Japanese athletes. Day and night, the squad challenges members to achieve harder and harder feats that push forward the limits of their endurance, agility, and mental fitness. As they pump in oxygen and pump out perspiration, they also start to distill the vital essence of sport, being both “in the moment” and connected to eternity.

Members of Unlock Dancing Plaza are renowned for their exploratory mix of creativity, fun, and self-awareness. Here, the contemporary dance company joins up with the amazingly athletic performers from Namstrops, a Japanese group with a special focus on kinetic energy, and SunFool, who designs the show's striking pop-up paper artworks. Teaming their individual talents in this vibrantly energetic production, the artists stirringly connect sporting endeavour to goal-setting and self-fulfilment for young audiences.

A wonderfully immersive introduction to the artistic imagination for all ages!

Monsieur Croche is dreaming during an afternoon nap. As his pillow slowly rises, he and his wife float towards a mesmerising enchanted island. Accompanied by the playful, blue-haired, horned fairy, they meet magical, giant-eyed elves, a huge insect that swallows musical notes, and have a tussle with a mermaid amid the tossing sea, as their inspirational journey draws them into the joyous world of creativity.

French 19th-century composer Claude Debussy is renowned for his atmospheric "impressionist" works. Here, Spain's La Companyia del Príncep Totilau blends a live piano performance of Debussy pieces, including favourites Clair de Luneand Deux Arabesques No.1, with human actors and appealing puppets, large-scale video images, intriguing lighting, and rippling movement and dance to conjure up a mysterious yet exhilarating realm of discovery. An uplifting opportunity to "see" with your ears and "hear" with your eyes.

Ingeniously employing super-sized rattan baskets and bamboo poles, this innovative circus-based show combines cultural metamorphosis, humour, and dazzling artistry to depict the rapid evolution of serene Vietnamese rural existence into frenetic urban life. Along with juggling, spinning, and daring aerial displays, the electrifying acrobats turn themselves into Mekong River creatures, rapidly construct and deconstruct markets, and build moon-lit homes before traditional scenes and sounds give way to contemporary city pursuits in fast-developing Vietnam.

The director Tuan Le, moved to Germany and started to tour internationally as a juggler at the age of 14, is the first solo artist of Vietnamese descent to have appeared in the world-famous Cirque du Soleil. À Ố Làng Phố immaculately merges acrobatics, contortionism, martial arts, dance, and comic moments with Vietnamese folk opera (cải lương) and modern stage design. In doing so, its aesthetic vision of the Vietnamese circus genre simultaneously takes the creative form to new heights and wider audiences. Popular around the world, the show has been enthusiastically received in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand, among other countries.

Magically original opera opens joys of the arts to babies

Operas can also be for the very young when music and movement are blended with white-themed installation art and costumes, soothing lighting, and the pared-back elegance of Scandinavia. Seated within the performance area, tiny tots and adults are enfolded by tranquil dancers, serene vocals, and explorable sets, providing an immersive up-close introduction to the wonders of the artistic world. Lifting, crawling, stretching... even the youngest of participants can become absorbed in this eye-opening kaleidoscopic production.

In Myriads of Worlds, choreographer Dalija Acin Thelander, acclaimed for her performances for babies, creates a delightful multi-art pageant that engages very early learners in stimuli-rich realms of colours, shapes, sound, and motion. Commissioned by the Royal Swedish Opera, the enchanting show and its free-to-roam setting awakens curiosity, fuels a desire to reconnoitre, and provides a personal and collective experience of creativity.

HKICF 2019 - MASTER WORKSHOP: BEYOND GONE

HKICF 2019: GAVIN WEBBER - MASTER WORKSHOP: BEYOND GONE

This is a workshop about why we move and how we connect. It will focus on internal states that drive action with the proposal that through movement we transcend our own self-perception and judgement, freeing the body and the mind.

In the workshop we will be working on the origin of the dancing body beyond aesthetics. What motivates us (and by that I mean all of us, not just dancers) to move? Where does the desire come from and how is it communicated?

During the choreographic and performance workshop, we will traverse many movement and theatre forms and amalgamate many techniques, including Chi Gong, contemporary dance, floor work, and improvisation, searching for an ‘inner state’ that allows us to redefine how we communicate our presence as performers and in turn examines how we define ourselves in our lives.

West Kowloon: Victor Fung in Residence – From The Top (Final Edit)

This June, as part of a two-week residency at Freespace, award-winning Hong Kong choreographer Victor Fung shares a work-in-progress presentation of From The Top (Final Edit), performed by independent local dancers Kenny Leung and Ronny Wong and Jack Sergison and Michael Barnes from the UK.

Exploring the interdependence of choreographers and dancers, From The Top (Final Edit) is a witty and beguiling dance work about the everyday life of dance artists and what it means to make art. Action on stage is juxtaposed with voiceovers and surtitles to reveal the challenges and absurdities of attempting to fulfil a choreographer’s artistic vision, and the need to keep “starting over”.

Based on an earlier work commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2015, From The Top (Final Edit) grew from Victor Fung’s participation in the Clore Leadership Programme in 2016/17 as a Hong Kong Scholar under the mentorship of Wayne McGregor. This residency at Freespace provides a research and development platform for further exploration of the work. The world premiere of the final work will be presented in September 2019 by Swindon Dance, UK.

This residency programme is part of a three-year dance exchange and collaboration between West Kowloon and Studio Wayne McGregor in the UK.

HKICF 2019 - MASTER WORKSHOP: MANUFACTURED

HKICF 2019 - MASTER WORKSHOP: MANUFACTURED

HKICF 2019 - MASTER WORKSHOP: MANUFACTURED

LED BY: FABRICE MAZLIAH & TILMAN O’DONNELL

“The Manufactured series ” is a study on the art of making things, and the art of things making (in return). To make things is not, after all, simply giving form to formless matter. Materials themselves move, guiding the human body and its actions. Things invite the gestures of the hand that gives them form. Making is much more a dance between the human body and the materials of the world, a following and being followed, a shaping and being shaped. Things come into being in the process of this dance.

In the second duet in the series, which will be presented during the festival, Tilman O’Donnell is collaborating with an Eschenbach porcelain cup produced in Germany in the mid 20th century. The cup, as a container, can be said to mirror the container that is the human body. However, it has to be transported rather delicately – the fragility of its material having been used historically to signify social refinement and sophistication. This is a dance of reciprocal moulding and being moulded, pouring and being poured, during which, possibly, slowly, form appears and re-appears.

Fabrice will teach a master workshop based on the rich knowledge he acquired as a long term independent choreographer and of his 20 years of experience as a performer and collaborator to the renown choreographer William Forsythe, with whom he worked both within The Ballet Frankfurt and thereafter with The Forsythe Company. He will offer in this workshop a platform of research on the embodied knowledge he has accumulated over the years.

《原點》The Key

進與退、
合與分 ;

We are merging and dividing, to stride across your land to my far shore, witness the eternal encounter of moving light and beating sound.

If there is a key between us
If you and I revisit our very beginning
Will we stand still or step forward?
1, 2, 3, turn.

A collaboration work between Hong Kong and Taiwan - Departure and Wei Dance Company fabricates the connection of dots and lines, and gathers our wandering eyes..

From a True Story – Christian Rizzo

From a True Story – Christian Rizzo

“Rizzo builds a touching and fraternal masculinity. The dancers clutch, hold hands, cling, in a dance of the fall and contact, anchored and airy, supportive but of character. [...] Christian Rizzo seems driven by the desire to look at these bodies in the face of the test of the collective.”
— Stéphanie Pichon, Junkpage

On 14 and 15 June, West Kowloon and Le French May co-present the Hong Kong debut of French choreographer Christian Rizzo’s acclaimed dance work From a True Story (d’après une histoire vraie).

Created in 2013, and inspired by the emotions stirred by a short all-male folk dance he experienced in Istanbul, From a True Story is Rizzo’s most well-known and widely toured work.

Described as a “contemporary vision of a folk dance on drums” the piece incorporates eight dancers and two live drummers – Didier Ambact and King Q4 – who drive the dance with repetitive, earthy, tribal rhythms, creating a zone of tension with the dancers that lies somewhere between dialogue and battle. On a minimalist stage, the all-male ensemble blend folkloric gesture and formal contemporary movement, creating a living sculpture that builds slowly to a joyous and visceral communal climax. Evoking notions of individuals and community, camaraderie and competition, memory and tradition, From a True Story is a work that strikes at the core of human experience.
