Stretching physical frontiers,
Soaring beyond boundaries

In addition to transforming Big Top razzmatazz into an art form, contemporary circus in the Nordics has developed a distinctive aesthetic all of its own, where music, drama, dance, acrobatics, and multimedia are ingeniously integrated into perspective-widening social commentary. In Limits, Sweden’s largest cirque nouveau focuses on compassion and the global refugee crisis. Here, those fleeing for their lives, only to be confronted with closed borders, find their counterparts in the performers’ risk-taking aerial acrobatics, teeterboard wizardry, and possibility-pushing juggling in a jaw-dropping display of physical and mental bravery, resilience, and creativity. A galvanising production offering an inspirational route to fresh understanding on displacement, barriers, and the essence of humanity.

Freeing the Body to Unmask the Soul

Using dance to perform Henrik Ibsen’s controversial 19th-century play provides the Norwegian National Ballet with a riveting way to explore the Pandora’s box of socially sensitive topics the tragedy tackles, including extramarital affairs, venereal disease, and religious tyranny. Directed by Ibsen specialist Marit Moum Aune, the production effectively recruits everyday movement and subverts conventional dance sequences to depict the power struggles between the sexes while multi-level sets ingeniously interweave characters’ past and present selves to counterpoint the realism with a more chimerical mood. A gripping and thought-provoking reinterpretation that dramatically speaks to the heart through body language alone.

Is there anyone who isn’t vulnerable?

In the darkest hours of the year 2017, in the cold December of Reykjavík, choreographer and artistic director of Iceland Dance Company Erna Ómarsdóttir and artist Valdimar Jóhannsson were invited by Sigur Rós to create a new dance work to their latest music for the Norður og Niður (North and Down) Festival, which was the band's answer to the consumeristic hype of the capitalism-driven Christmas holidays. The company then set out on its own electrifying quest to reveal and confront the haunting uncertainties and inner demons that can twist and upturn lives in the absence of light. The work was inspired by the dark burdens of the patriarchal and power- hungry institutions that have oppressed the masses throughout history, and in a sense became a tool for the artists to exorcise these ancient demons from their souls and bodies.

In this powerful final work of a four-part series focused on the night within and vulnerability of the body, the ethereal rock music of Sigur Rós – some previously unreleased – is teamed with the company's leading-edge contemporary dancers. The emotive performers roar, scream, become limp or highly charged as they wrestle with old ghosts yet also find the way to embrace darkness as a place to rest, dream, and be at one with themselves. A must-see reflection of our times.

Overview

This October, Hong Kong Ballet will stage ‘the ballet of all ballets’ Swan Lake, which always sweeps audiences off their feet with its beautifully tragic romance and its theme of ultimate redemption. The Royal Ballet’s former principal ballerina Zenaida Yanowsky will come coach our dancers in this showcase of classical ballet’s most demanding techniques and expressive artistry.

Her masterful performances in Swan Lake have been hailed by critics as ‘electrifying, exquisite…her phrasing preternaturally responsive to the expressive possibilities of the choreography’. Zenaida will teach a public ballet masterclass on 9 Oct, and we are thrilled to offer this very unique opportunity for ballet bunheads and fans to learn from her expert coaching and experience!

*About Zenaida Yanowsky*
Zenaida Yanowsky is a former Principal of The Royal Ballet. She joined the Company in 1994, was promoted to Principal in 2001 and retired from the Company in 2017.

Born in Lyon and raised in Spain, Yanowsky trained with Anatol Yanowsky and Carmen Robles. After winning a silver medal at Varna in 1991, she joined Paris Opera Ballet. She has performed leading roles in classical, dramatic and contemporary repertories and has created roles for choreographers like Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Alexei Ratmansky, Twyla Tharp, Will Tuckett and Christopher Wheeldon, among others.

Yanowsky is featured in the short dance films Duet and The Sandman, Riot at the Rite and BBC’s documentary The Dying Swan, and she has collaborated with Tuckett to create work for Whitechapel Gallery and Tate Modern. Her accolades include gold medals at the 1993 European Young Dancers Competition and the 1994 Jackson International Ballet Competition, Outstanding Female Performance (Classical) at the 2016 National Dance Awards for Elizabeth and the Grishko Award for Best Female Dancer at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards 2017.

*Conducted in English. Participants must be twelve years old and up with at least five years of ballet training.

The story is set in 1840 when the warships of the Western powers blockaded the Pearl River estuary, and the First Opium War broke out. An irregular force made up of Chinese militia and citizens fight against the British in the Sanyuanli village on the outskirts of Canton (now Guangzhou).  The story reflects the spiritual awakening, courage to fight and the national spirit of the people in Guangdong during the political chaos of the time.  Such a social climate is likened to “a lion awakening”, and this theme runs throughout the play as the storyline traces the coming of age of ordinary folks driven by patriotism.  The play is also a rich tapestry displaying with insight humanism, political changes, family relationships, friendship, love, and the dilemma between the family and the state in the southern part of Guangdong.

In terms of artistic style, Awakening Lion shows strong characteristics of South China and indigenous features of Old Canton.  By integrating innovative elements and multimedia technology, the staging exudes both modern appeal and visual impact.  In terms of choreography, the blending of Chinese dance and traditional lion dance is a bold, innovative concept.  The production has been supported by the 2018 Special Funds for Cultural Prosperity and Development of Guangdong Province and the Key Literary and Artistic Projects of Guangzhou.  It won the 11th ‘Lotus Awards’ for Chinese Dance – Dance Drama Category.  As the ‘Lotus Award’ is the most authoritative award for professional dance in China and the highest achievement for Chinese professional dancers, the artistic excellence of Awakening Lion is assured.

The running time of each performance is approximately 2 hour and 5 minutes with a 15-minute intermission.
Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually.  Latecomers and audiences who leave their seats during the performance will only be admitted to their own seats at a suitable break or during the intermission.

A multimedia staging unfolding time and space

‘Everything is done with precision. It does surprise, and occasionally delight.’

ST/LL is a multimedia production created by Japan’s avant-garde contemporary artist Shiro Takatani, a founding member of artist collective Dumb Type.  It is a visual spectacle exploring the notion of time and space. The stage is like a mirror to exhibit the reflection of massive projections and movement of actors, where audiences are transported to a hypnotic stage.  The music and sound effects are created by the esteemed composer and Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto, together with Marihiko Hara and Takuya Minami. Japanese actress Mayu Tsuruta, a nominee for the Best Supporting Actress in the Japan Academy Film Prize, also participates in the performance.  The programme was premiered in France in 2015 and was then taken on tour to Belgium, Italy, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.

Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance |

Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance |

In the 19th century, the people of Tai Hang began performing a dragon dance to stop a run of bad luck afflicting their village. More than a century later, their village has been all but swallowed up by Hong Kong’s fast-growing city. But the dragon keeps on dancing. It has even danced its way onto China’s third national list of intangible cultural heritage and been selected as one of the Remarkable Examples of Good Practice for Safeguarding the National ICH Items in recognition of the efforts in safeguarding this intangible cultural heritage.

All this started a few days before the Mid-Autumn Festival, sometime around 100 years ago. First a typhoon slammed into the fishing and farming community of Tai Hang. This was followed by a plague, and then when a python ate the villagers’ livestock, they said enough was enough. A soothsayer decreed the only way to stop the chaos was to stage a fire dance for three days and nights during the upcoming festival. The villagers made a huge dragon from straw and covered it with incense sticks, which they then lit. Accompanied by drummers and erupting firecrackers, they did what they were told and danced for three days and three nights — and the plague disappeared. Check out the fire dragon dance as well as an array of festive happenings around Hong Kong.

Tai Hang may no longer be a village, but its locals still recreate the fiery ancient ritual to this day with a whopping dragon that is not to be taken lightly! On the day before the Mid-Autumn Festival, dragon dance participants perform a series of rituals in the Hakka dialect at Lin Fa Temple, a Declared Monument known for its unique East-meets-West style architectural features. The commemorative performance then wends its way in fire, smoke and festive fury through the backstreets of Tai Hang over three moon-fuelled days.

JUMPING FRAMES INTERNATIONAL DANCE VIDEO FESTIVAL 2019 |

From the act of seeing and being seen, we dance beyond the imagination Two VR dance videos unveiled for first time at the Festival Dance or cinema, fiction or non-fiction, rapid or steady –– Dance video is reflections and narratives in the format of the film, how dance and life are sourced for both mediums in its manifestations. The City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) will once again host the Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival (the Festival) in Broadway Cinematheque and Tai Kwun from 6 to 15 September 2019. This year we explore the theme of “Portraiture”, shifting the focus back on the creation and performers and unearthing the possibilities in dance and video. Jump-starting the Festival in style is our opening film, Hybrid Motion, jointly presented by CCDC, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and Cinemovement (Singapore). Through this collection of four short films, it reveals the narrative of dance video jointly explored by the eight artists from Hong Kong and Singapore. Meanwhile, we are going to unveil for the first time at the Festival the two virtual reality (VR) dance videos, Afterimage for Tomorrow and SWIM 0.5, acclimating the audience to a brand new experience.

Known to be one of the most spectacular visual feasts across the dance scene in Asia, the Festival seeks to fuse international opportunity and platform for directors and dancers of different nationalities. Visage, which took the Taiwanese director TSAI Ming-liang three years to conceptualize, is the first film opus collected by the Louvre Museum. Our opening film, Hybrid Motion, presents a collection of four films coproduced by a team of directors and choreographers from Singapore and HK –– among which are Till Then, Awakening in a Dream and Ward 11 by HK choreographer MUI Cheuk-yin and film director TSANG Tui-shan whose talents are guaranteed to thrill audience. In Memories of My Body, Indonesian director Garin 2 NUGROHO throws himself into the secret of sensuality and sexuality awakening within. The Written Face offers an insight into the charismatic personas of the celebrated Japanese Kabuki star, Tamasaburo Bando, across four continuous acts. In Asian Dance Shorts, a feature-length compilation of seven independent short dance films, it draws together the cogitation and inspiration from various directors from HK, Singapore, the Philippines, Korea and Macau to engage audience in critical inquiry into living presence. Russian Ark takes you on an extraordinary time-travelling journey back to the early eighteenth century of Russia. Among the stellar line-up of dance films hitting the big screens, we have internationally acclaimed productions, such as Polina, a competition entry for Venice Days section (Giornate degli Autori) of the Venice Film Festival; and Girl, which won both the FIPRESCI Prize and Best Performance for the Un Certain Regard section at the 71st Cannes Films Festival.

This year, for the first time in its editions, the Festival sets up VR dance videos and installation video work. In Afterimage for Tomorrow, director Singing CHEN collaborates with choreographer CHOU Shu-yi to perform the ineffable in memories. SWIM 0.5 creates a surrealistic journey for viewers to travel between reality and virtual reality that stimulates their imagination in dance and space. Stemming from a montage of iconic dance sequences, Primitive Nostalgia examines through dance the construction of national cultural identity.

In search of the relationship of “seeing and being seen” between performers and audiences, the films Look Two Ways Revisited and Dance Goes On suggest a flashback through analyzing others, leading to a greater understanding of ourselves and reflection on the connection "I" have with the living world. In which the choreographers and lead dancers of the Dance Goes On, starring MUI Cheuk-yin, Yuri NG and XING Liang, encompass a superb grasp of the muse coming from the Director Anothermountainman (Stanley WONG) and visualize his thoughts and realization on screen. Celebrating two eminent dancers in the world, Anne Teresa De KEERSMAEKER and Maguy MARIN, we specially present Mitten and The Urgency to Act, of which both making their Asia premiere at the Festival, to salute their contributions to the dance scene and their pursuit of perfection.

Twilight years are not always destined to sink into a purposeless rut and count down the days to death. Body in Time@GGPPP and Third Act deliberate on the question of how to grow old without feeling old. As seen in the films, neither the stiffing joints nor the blurring vision could refrain the golden-agers to embrace their passion for life. In remembrance of the 10th year passing of Pina Bausch, the Festival proposes the 3 mirroring of conversations documented in One Day Pina Asked and Coffee with Pina, diving into the more mundane perspectives of this acclaimed dance master.

This year’s Festival invites the audience to experience the artists’ soul paths along with their stories and source of their inspirations. We attempt to peep into the individual insights, autobiographical perspectives, either inwards or outwards, and to ponder upon the philosophical development of the artists juxtaposing their geographical connections, memories and narratives. We bounce across both disciplines from Cinema to Dance, from movement of the body to movement of the camera, from the idea of mise-en-scène and choreography. Let us travel through the mediums of film and dance, manifesting in the documentary, narrative re-invention and in new technology, where dance is embedded through time, space and its abstraction.

We Are Now Six: The Collision of Group and Individuals |

As a number, six has an extensive associations and implications in different cultures. In Egypt, six is a cosmic number in the material world, representing time and space. In China, six is the directions of up, down, left, right, front and behind; or up, down, east, west, north and south, meaning the whole of heaven and earth. In Greece, six is a perfect number, also known as the “complete number”; but in the Bible, six represents the mortals and their imperfections, including their weaknesses and sins.

We Are Now Six uses the various combinations of six as an entry point: 1 vs 5 is one being outnumbered by five, the politics of 3 groups of 2 vs 1, 3 groups of 1 on 1, or the natural harmonious whole, or even the singular ones that work on its own, etc. It is the innumerable entanglements of collisions, contrasts, interactions, negotiations, adjustments and compromises of individuals and the crowds, minority and majority, the underprivileged and the mainstream.

Dance to Stand: A courage-raising performance in solidarity「

Overview

【Dance to Stand: A courage-raising performance in solidarity】

We are a group of performers who express our faith and feelings through our body - a battleground thrust upon us by birth.

This June, people took to the street to protest the extradition law, resulting in the excessive force used by the police, prompting defiant civilians to converge on the street. It has been two months since the outcry, taking Hong Kong people to a unique state of burning experience. For us who practise dance, we are overwhelmed by what we witness on the street: the sequences of dance improvisation, choreographed by people’s blood, sweat and growl. Emotions, bodies, and energies of defiance flow on the street to become ubiquitous and omniform tides of resistance.

In response to and support of the concerted efforts of the protesters, a group of performers from various backgrounds are presenting a courage-raising performance of movement and music. The performance calls for support for the organisations that help in the fight for justice. It is also a show of solidarity, as we believe on whatever stage we stand, we stand together, and no one less!

*Heartfelt thanks to all volunteering performers and participating parties, and the support of Cattle Depot Theatre and art-mate. All proceeds go to Hong Kong In-Media & 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund.

Star of Canaan- Musical Theatre Competition

Star of Canaan- Musical Theatre Competition

Star of Canaan, “Star” means the horizons that all dancers pursue and dream of regardless of their age or ability. Star is literally the shining star up above the sky that is beyond our reach. “Star” therefore resembles the ultimate goal all dancers are pursuing which is the “state of perfection” in dance. Despite all hardships and difficulties, we still persist on and strive to be closer to such “Star”, trying our best to pursue the “state of perfection”. This “Star” leads us to our way of success and guides us to feel the true essence of dance; it also symbolises the kind of motivation we need.
